Functional Medicine: A Systems Approach to Reversing the Epidemic of Chronic Disease
The healthcare system of today is built upon the unprecedented success of medical interventions developed during the mid-20th Century to treat communicable diseases. The success of this “acute care” model aimed at rapid diagnosis and pharmaceutical intervention is undeniable. But the burden of disease has shifted. More than 75% of total healthcare cost in the United States is now attributed to chronic, noncommunicable conditions and this is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade. The healthcare system as currently constructed is ill-equipped to deal with the burden of chronic disease. Functional Medicine offers a different approach to healthcare that leverages the success of the acute care model and integrates a systems biology model of personalized care that is ideal for chronic care. This course provides an introduction to the principles, tools, and clinical approach of Functional Medicine and demonstrates how Functional Medicine can help reverse the epidemic of chronic disease.
